Ecuador will stick to one-China policy
Ecuadorian President-elect Rafael Correa said on Wednesday that the South American country will adhere to the one-China policy and hoped China will achieve national reunification at an early date.

When meeting with the Chinese ambassador to Ecuador, Liu Yuqin, Correa said he will endeavor to deepen relations between the two nations on the basis of mutual respect, and strengthen bilateral cooperation in energy, agriculture and forestry.

Liu, on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao and the Chinese government, congratulated Correa on his election victory.

Liu said the Chinese government has always attached great importance to the development of bilateral relations and that the bilateral relations of friendly cooperation have developed smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic ties 26 years ago.

The two countries have witnessed fruitful cooperation in political, economic and cultural fields and close coordination on international issues, Liu said.

Liu also expressed the belief that bilateral relations will enjoy further development in Correa's tenure.

As a leading figure of the left-wing faction, Correa was declared winner of Ecuador's presidential runoff last month, leading conservative tycoon Alvaro Noboa by a large margin. He will be sworn in on Jan. 15 for a four-year term.
