Costa Rica Opens New Embassy
in Tel Aviv
Costa Rica opened its new
embassy in the Israeli city of
Tel Aviv on Friday, relocating
its diplomatic headquarters
after 24 years in Jerusalem, the
Foreign Ministry announced.
Bruno Stagno, Costa Rica's
foreign minister, said the
moving of the embassy was in
line with relevant resolutions
by the United Nations' Security
Council and General Assembly.
Costa Rican president Oscar
Arias said the relocation was
aimed at "rectifying a
historical error which has
deprived us of almost every kind
of friendship with the Arab
world and, more broadly, with
all the Islamic world."

Since 1982, only Costa Rica and
El Salvador had their embassies
located in Jerusalem,
prompting the nations of the
Arab League to break off
relations with Costa Rica.
El Salvador has also said it
would relocate its embassy to
Tel Aviv. but it has yet to make
the move.
