Green Turtle Slaughter
Illegal fishing may have caused
the accidental deaths of about
200 green turtles in the
protected area of Playa Ostional,
in Costa Rica s Pacific coast,
Gilbert Rojas, from the area s
Association of Development,
said.
This is the second such mass
killing of dozens of turtles
this month, Rojas regretted.
It is beyond belief that we have
this situation in what is
considered the world´s most
important turtle nesting site.
Rojas explained that dead
turtles were found along five
miles of beach coast.
Authorities suspect they were
wounded or killed as they fell
into the nets of night shrimpers
which violate the protected area
limits.
