U.S. Fugitive No. 29 In Police Custody
Yet another "wanted" by the FBI has been captured in Costa Rica. Yesterday, agents of the a Dirección de Inteligencia y Seguridad Nacional (DIS) in co-ordination with Interpol, captured Max Allan Stone in front of his luxurious residence in Escazú.

Stone, 60 years of age, has been living in Costa Rica since the mid 90's was wanted by the FBI tied to a multi million dollar fraud, including money laundering.

Stone had been under DIS and Interpol surveillance for a number of weeks following a request by the United States authorities of his whereabouts, including his residing in Escazú.

Police officials waited outside the Stone home for him to come out and arrested him when he did about 8:00am, giving him no time to react, being caught under total surprise, said a DIS official.

The DIS agent said Stone did not resist the arrest and was very calm, almost if he had been expecting it.

According to the DIS information, Stone was the owner of a sportsbook located in Santa Ana and an office in La Sabana. He is also listed as owning stock in other companies in Costa Rica with "large" assets, as well as owner of valuable properties.

Authorities said that the man was living a "low profile" lifestyle.

According to Interpol, Stone and his wife (her name was not revealed) applied for "refugee" status to th Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería (immigration service) some years back, which was denied.

The international "orden de capture" (capture order) was delivered by the United States on Wednesday, which put the DIS into action to locate the man and keep an eye on him before making the arrest on Saturday.

Stone is now in the custody of the Tribunal de Penal de San José, where a request for his extradition is being considered.

With the Stone arrest, the number of U.S.  fugitives caught in Costa Rica this year is 29.
