BETonSports Firing of 1.400
Employees Official
As we reported yesterday morning
(see story
BETonSPORTS Preparing to Leave
Costa Rica), one of the
largest sportsbook operations in
Costa Rica gave formal notice to
its 1.400 employees. The news,
though a surprise to many, was
not a shock as rumours had
already been circulating of an
impending shutdown of
operations.
BETonSports.com (BoS) officials
told the employees that the
company has the financial
resources to pay severanace pay
to all its employees and will do
so within the next 30 to 60
days.
Franciso Conejo, lawyer for BoS,
refused to elaborate on the
"firings" and to talk about BoS
founder Gary Kaplan and his
whereabouts.
The problems at BoS came on July
16 when its CEO, David
Carruthers, was detained in
Texas on his flight home to
Costa Rica from England.
Carruthers, along with a number
of other betting executives, is
facing a number of betting and
fraud related charges .
Francisco Morales of the
Minsterio de Trabajo (Labour
Ministry) said yesterday that
his inspectors will be visiting
the BoS offices in San Pedro
Mall early this morning to
"ensure that employees receive
guarantees (payment) that they
are entitled to".
Yesterday afternoon, the eight
floor of the San Pedro Mall
offices was filled with BoS
employees who were told the
news. Some have worked with the
firm for up to five years, who
were given the notice by Clive
Archer, director of operations
and a member of the board of
directors of BoS.
BoS officials also affirmed that
the company will pay all its
outstanding debts, once it sells
all its assets.BETonSPORTS
