Guatemala Opens Ophthalmic
Hospital
Guatemalan President Oscar
Berger and Cuban Public Health
Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer
opened on Friday a modern
ophthalmologic hospital, the
first of its kind in Central
America.
The health center, located in
northern San Cristobal Verapaz,
was named after Jose Joaquin
Palma, a Cuban patriot of the
independence wars, who lived in
Guatemala for several years and
wrote the lyrics of this country
s national anthem.
"I want to express my most
sincere thanks to the Cuban
government and people for the
medical aid," President Berger
asserted in his speech.
When the ceremony began, the
Guatemalan president wished a
speedy recovery to Cuban
President Fidel Castro, and
called him the great sponsor of
the hospital, equipped with
cutting-edge technology.
He also expressed his admiration
and recognition of the
opportunity offered to thousands
of youth to study medicine in
Havana, where they are well
trained before they return to
Guatemala to assist their
neediest compatriots.
