Ortega Still Has the Lead in
Nicaragua
Presidential candidate Daniel
Ortega, of the Sandinista
National Liberation Front (FSLN),
continues to be front-runner in
Nicaraguan polls, but without
the votes needed to win in the
first round.
According to Costa Rican Borges
y Asociados Agency on Friday,
Ortega has support of 31.4
percent of those surveyed.
However, to win the presidency
he needs a minimum 35 percent of
valid votes and a 5-point lead
over his closest rival,
Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance (ALN)
nominee Eduardo Montealegre, who
has 29 percent.
Montealegre is followed by
Constitutionalist Liberal Party
(PLC) Jose Rizo, 15.7;
Sandinista Renovator Movement (MRS)
Edmundo Jarquin, 15.2 and
Alternative for Change s Eden
Pastora, with 1.1 percent.
The survey revealed that at this
point, in a runoff 43.1 percent
would choose Montealegre and
32.6 Ortega.
Nevertheless, as a party, the
FSLN is ahead with 33.4 points
while ALN got 23.
The PLC and MRS trail with 17.3
percent and 13.6 percent,
respectively..
The poll, taken July 23-30 of
1,200 people nationwide, had a
3.2 percent error margin and
showed 7.6 percent of voters are
undecided.
