Colombia, FTA Vs Poultry Farmers
President of the Colombian
Poultry Farmers National
Federation (FENAVI) Jorge
Enrique Bedoya warned on the
possible disappearance of his
sector due to the regulations
established by the US-sponsored
Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Bedoya stated Saturday that once
that commercial treaty comes
into effect, Colombia would get
the ton of seasoned chicken 660
dollars cheaper than national
productions what would turn
unsustainable for the sector in
24 months.
The FTA would annihilate more
than this industry's 60 percent,
the leader forecasted and called
on the Colombian government to
maintain the prohibition on the
importation of that product
issued in 1994 in order to save
the national industry.
