Guatemala Talks with Rank and File
Reactivation of the farming economy will be the first issue at negotiating tables from Wednesday between the Guatemalan Executive and social groups, after hot nationwide protests.

Representatives of the National Indigenous and Campesino Coordination, Union and Popular Action Unit, Agrarian Platform, among others, plus the Presidency´s Planning and Programming Secretariat are participating in the talks concluding May 9.

Last week, after a 9-hour discussion, popular leaders and the government agreed to solve the 15 agrarian conflicts and implement the Agreement of Indigenous Rights and Identity that deals with access to land, health and education.

President Oscar Berger´s administration committed to strengthening housing programs, analyzing a pay raise, reforming the labor code and legislation in favor of community radio stations.

In addition, authorities announced a negotiating table with the Executive, Legislative and Judicial powers, but Berger delayed the meeting until other organizations cold make it to the table.
