Salvadorians Protest Mining
Exploitation
Environmentalists and social
groups gathered on Friday in
front of the Canadian Embassy in
El Salvador to protest the
damage that Canadian mining
companies have caused to the
ecosystem and local people.
According to the demonstrators,
mining activities by the
Canadian Martinique Minerals SA
are damaging the environment in
northern El Salvador.
Environmentalists and community
leaders called on the Canadian
Embassy and El Salvador´s
ministries of Economy and
Environment to put an end to
mining exploitation.
The Catholic Church expressed
support for the communities in
the states of Chalatenango,
Cabanas and Morazan, where the
Canadian company is planning to
open mines.
Angel Ibarra, leader of Unidad
Ecologica Salvadorena, condemned
the free trade agreement with
the US, which includes mining in
detriment to the people.
The Center for Research on
Investment and Trade has
repeatedly denounced mining as a
new form of expropriation of El
Salvador´s natural resources.
