Child-Murder Wave Hits Guatemala
At least three children have
been killed this weekend in
Guatemala, a country where
violence spreads like an
epidemic throughout every social
strata.
In Puerto Barrios, Izabal, an 11
year old girl was killed with an
assault rifle in front her home,
while a 10 year old boy died of
machete wounds inflicted by a
gang member in San Juan Cotzal,
Quiche Province.
The body of a 17 year old
student found in Villa Nueva
municipality signaled that he
was stoned to death and another
two children suffered fire arm
wounds in front their school in
Guatemala City.
Human rights authorities and
organizations like Ombudsman
Sergio Morales and Save The
Children group have urged the
government to guarantee the
children´s physical and
emotional integrity.
The mounting violence killed in
2005 some 500 children, a figure
that might grow this year,
pushing the issue into the
political agenda for up coming
legislative debate.
