Tren Urbano
Almost Ready
Following many tests and
announcements, the tren urbano
(commuter train) is almost ready
to hit the rails, this following
the arrival for Spanish experts
who will make a full analysis
and inventory of the rail system
before hand.
The visit should occur during
the next two weeks, after which
the train is expected to make
it's debut as part of the
governments plan to save on fuel
consumption.
The rate will be between 300 and
350 colones (us$0.60 and $0.70)
each way for a trip that will
take about an hour from Pavas to
San Pedro, operating during
morning and afternoon rush hours
during weekdays.
The Ministerio de Obras Pública
y Transporte has been working on
upgrading train crossings. Some
rain crossings have been totally
reconstructed, while others just
needed some renovations. Big X's
have been marked on the pavement
at rail crossings and signals
and bells have been checked to
ensure they are in working
order.
The first few weeks, Transito
(traffic) officials will be on
hand at each rail crossing to
ensure the flow of traffic and
avoid accidents. Costa Ricans
and foreigners are not
accustomed to take caution at
rail crossings as there have
been no trains running in the
city for a long time.
