All Female Party Can Be Registered, TSE Overturns Earlier Decision
The new political party Nueva Liga Feminista can now be registered for the 2006 Presidential elections after it was rejected by the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) for failing to have any male members.

The all female political party was first rejected because the rules of the Registro Civi, based in legislation, that says that the make up of a political party must be at least 40% of the women. The rule was created to ensure that women were able to participate in political parties.

In the case of the Nueva Liga Feminista the "40% women" rule was interpreted to apply to men by the authorities of the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE).

The Nueva Liga Feminista made up of all women found themselves on the reverse end, not having the required 40% men and such was rejected to be inscribed in the upcoming presidential elections.

Ana Rosa Ruiz, treasurer for the party, was happy with yesterday's decision, who considered that an all female political party is a positive action and brings women closer to equality.

The decision to inscribe the party was based on the interpretation of the legislation that "women" was not to mean persons. The legislation is protect women's rights to participate in the political arena where men have had the advantage.

Reserving the earlier decision, it was noted that in no way has the Nueva Liga Feminista impeded men for participating.

According to Ruiz, the party is now able to concentrate on their campaign and put into action their policies as they look to gain representation in Congress. The party will not be fielding a presidential candidate in this election.
