Honduran Elections Will Not Return Hope
Sunday´s presidential elections, with all major candidates´ eyes fixed on Neoliberal programs, will not restore the hopes of 3.9 million Honduran voters, a group of economists and other professionals affirm.

"What should have been central to the campaign, ended being hidden," asserted a news statement from the Honduras´ Foreign Debt and Development Social Forum on Friday.

The presidency has swung for more than 100 years between National and Liberal parties and neither touches the domestic crisis, centering their campaign on personal attacks, it said.

It was noted that another coincidence is both parties seek US advisors; the NP had Mark Klugmann, aide to US ex President Ronald Reagan and Salvadoran ex President Francisco Flores, and the Liberals chose Ted Devine, strategist for John Kerry and Stanley Greenberg who worked for Kathleen Kennedy.

While 80 percent of Honduras' seven million people live under the poverty line and unemployment rate hits 30 percent among the active population, the parties´ lukewarm approach to domestic affairs barely consisted of promising a "firm hand" with youth gangs.

Unificacion Democratica Party´s Maria Luisa Borjas said that it will be like choosing between two soccer teams having to vote for two parties that have never solved domestic problems.

Even the Archbishop, Monsignor Oscar Rodriguez, viewed this race as "the most aggressive and violent in decades."
