Gasoline To Transport Prisoner,
Nicaraguan Officials Claim
Costa Rican police officer,
Diego Ortiz Ortiz, will have to
wait a little longer for his
trial to commence, when it was
postponed yesterday because
Nicaraguan jail authorities say
they do not have the gasoline
required to transport Ortiz the
163 kilometres to the court
house in Juigalpa, from San
Carlos, Nicaragua.
The trial has been rescheduled
for next Tuesday, according to
judge Julio Cambronero, who
added, in granting the
postponement, that this (lack of
gasoline) is a common
occurrence.
Yorleny Laguna, the wife of
Ortiz, said that she was told by
authorities that they have the
vehicle to transport her
husband, but not the gasoline.
"This is an attempt to
demoralize us psychologically",
the woman said on hearing the
news of the postponement.
Initially Ortiz was being held
in a jail in San Carlos, but
later moved to Juigalpa. Due to
the poor road conditions, the
trip takes a little more than
five hours.
Ortiz was arrested on October 1
by the Guardia Naciónal de
Nicaragua (National Guard) in
the areas of México de Upala,
accused of kidnapping a
Nicaraguan police officer and
his friend.
