Panama to apply for APEC
membership: official
Panama will make an application
to join the Asia Pacific
Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC)
at the organization's CEO Summit
from Nov. 17-19, Panamanian
Foreign Minister Samuel Lewis
said on Sunday.
Lewis, who is now on a visit to
South Korea, issued a statement
to the press in Seoul. He is
preparing to attend the APEC-CEO
summit 2005, which is to be held
in Busan in the southern part of
South Korea.
Lewis will meet Korean
politicians, businessmen and
representatives of shipping
companies in Seoul. He will also
receive an honorary doctorate
from South Korea's INJE
University.
In Busan, he will meet his
counterparts from the
Philippines, Indonesia,
Singapore, Thailand and Russia.
APEC, founded in 1989,
represents about 45 percent of
the world trade and half of the
world's population.
It will admit nine new members
in 2007. Mexico, Chile and Peru
are the only members from Latin
America.
The APEC-CEO summit is a
prestigious annual event for the
business leaders from APEC
members to meet and discuss
economic and trade issues.
