Slum Dwellers Doubled
In the last 17 years, the number of people living in slums in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GMA) -which extends from San Ramon, Alajuela, to Paraiso, Cartago - doubled.

In 1987, there were 104 slums with 62,000 people, 4.5% of the population of the GMA.  Last year, the number of slums went up to 197 and the dwellers of hovels to 135,000, or 6.21% of the residents of the GMA.

However, the increase in this 17-year period in the number of residents in slums - 55% - was lower than that in the overall figure for the GMA, which was 65%.

The data is recorded in the 11th State of the Nation Report, which is issued yearly.
