Train Locomotive Lands in
Water a Bridge Washes Away
It was unbelievable. A train
locomotive in Matina (Limón) was
washed off its tracks and swept
into the river, with all its
occupants. Fortunately no one
was injured.
The Instituto Costarricense de
Ferrocarriles (Incofer) said
that the large amount of rain
that fell on the area Thursday
night, broke a dyke between
Matidan and Estrada, that washed
away the bridge, just ahead of
the locomotive, that went into
the river with crew and all.
Carlos Ham Haminndion, the
conductor, said that they were
moving along the tracks when in
an instant the Cuatro Vueltas de
Estrada bridge washed away in
front of him.
Buenaventura Fonseca and Carlos
Solano were in the locomotive
with Haminndion, who say they
got scared when the locomotive
started to sink, who quickly
called 911 for help.
The train was carrying bananas
from the local plantations to
the shipping docks in Matina.
The conductor said that they had
no warning of the water
conditions. Only the locomotive
fell into the river, the freight
cars were left on the track.
