Mexico Confirms Fujimori
Passed Through Its Territory
Mexican Foreign Minister Luis
Ernesto Derbez has corroborated
that ex President of Peru
Alberto Fujimori, who said he
never left the plane, passed
through Mexico on his way to
Chile.
He went legally through Mexico
although INTERPOL had issued a
red alert (warrant) but did not
submit an official extradition
request.
Derbez said the ex head of state
"apparently was present for some
45 minutes during refueling of
the plane that flew in from
Tokyo."
He said that local authorities
were aware of this, but lacked
the power to arrest him in the
absence of an order to extradite
him.
The National Immigration
Institute reported that Fujimori
arrived in Tijuana on Saturday
at 22:10 local time, aboard a
private plane that left 50
minutes later for Santiago de
Chile.
Sources related to the
investigations told media that
Mexico had received two warnings
since 2002 on the eventual
presence of the Peruvian ex
president.
The charges against Fujimori
include, among others, homicide,
inflicting severe injuries and
causing the disappearance of
persons, as well as illegal
association and embezzlement.
Fujimori was detained Sunday in
Santiago de Chile at the request
of Peru.
