It Will Cost ¢16 Billion
Colones to Repair Roads and
Bridges
The government estimates that it
will cost ¢16 billion colones
(us$32.5 million dollars) to
repair the bridges, roads and
sewers damaged or destroyed by
floods in September and October,
epsecially in the Northern and
Central Pacific regions.
The Comisión Nacional de
Emergencia (CNE) is expected to
approve the expenditure this
week, as it analyzes a plan by
the Ministerio de Obras Públicas
y Transportes (MOPT) and the
Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (CONAVI).
CONAVi director, Alejandro
Molina, said that the final cost
could be lower.
In total, 22 bridges were
destroyed by strong currents, 10
of which CONAVI will give
priority as those bridges
connect communities that have
been isolated since September.
In addition, CONAVI and the MOPT
are assessing damage to what is
considered to be 60% of the
national road network, a direct
result of the severe rainy
season. Most roads in Guanacaste
and in the Central and South
Pacific have suffered some
damage, some more than others.
The rainy season is coming to an
end and the work the work can
now commence.
