Property of Guatemala's
ex-president confiscated
Guatemalan prosecutors said on
Saturday that two cars and a
tract of land of former
President Alfonso Portillo were
confiscated in connection with
charges brought against him of
embezzling more than 15 million
US dollars of public funds.
The properties may be used to
partly offset the loss he had
caused to the country, reports
reaching here from Guatemala
City, capital of Guatemala,
said, quoting a communique
issued by the country's attorney
general's office.
Portillo is accused of stealing
15.7 million dollars of public
funds in 2001 and causing to the
state losses totaling 500
million dollars during his term
from 2000 to 2004.
Portillo moved to Mexico in
February 2004, soon after he
left office and before
authorities launched legal
proceedings against him. He
tried to move to the United
States but was denied a visa.
Guatemala's Supreme Court has
requested Mexican authorities to
extradite Portillo and hopes to
put him on trial in Guatemala.
