New Traffic Light System
Proposed For San José
San José with a centralized
traffic light system? That could
soon be a reality if a plan by
the Ministerio de Obras Públicas
y Transportes (MOPT) moves ahead
to modernize the traffic lights
in San José in an attempt to
better move traffic, especially
at peak times.
The system would cost between
about us$3.5 million dollars and
would be totally financed by the
Consejo Nacional de Vialidad.
The new traffic light system
would be able to be controlled
manually as well, when a control
centre can monitor traffic flow
and the state of each traffic
light and remotely control the
traffic light's operation.
There are currently 17 companies
interested in bidding for the
contract, which should be closed
by October and will then require
the approval of the Contraloría
General de la República
(Comptroller's office) which
should be in place by no later
than April of 2007.
