60% of Ticos Are Fat
Sixty percent of adult Ticos
are "fat", while 6% of children
are also overweight and 25% of
adolescents have problem with
obesity.
That is the news that kicks off
the Semana Nacional de Nutrición,
- National Nutrition Week - with
the theme "enjoy life eating
sensible foods".
Luis Tacsan an official with the
Ministerio de Salud (Health
Ministry) says that each year
instead of decreasing the number
of obese in the country, the
number keeps climbing
considerably.
Tacsan is calling on the nation
to begin exercising and to learn
to eat sensibly. "Obesity is a
result of high consumption of
sugars and fats and sedentarism.
Sedentarism affects body fat
mass index and fat-free mass
index in adults aged 18 to 98
years.
Families that live in urban
areas are those most affected by
obesity", added Tacsan.
The Health Ministry has plans
for national census for 2006 to
update their data on the
problem. The census will take
into account all areas of the
country.
