Twelve tons of cocaine seized in
Colombia
Colombian authorities seized 12
tons of cocaine in the biggest
drug bust in the country's
history, local media reported
Friday.
The drug was seized in an
operation that ended early
Friday by the navy and the
national police in the
southwestern province of Narino.
Five suspects were arrested and
nine assault rifles and several
boasts confiscated in the
operation.
"This is the biggest haul ever
seized in the world in a single
operation, in a single day and
in a single place," the head of
Colombia's National Police,
Jorge Castro, told a press
conference.
The head of Narino Police,
colonel Edgar Martinez, said the
drug, with a street value of
about 400 million US dollars,
"belongs to illegal armed
groups."
Colombia is one of the principal
drug producers and exporters in
the world, with an average of
600 tons of cocaine a year, of
which 100 tons were seized in
2004.
The drug mainly end up in the
United States and Europe.
