Portugal backs Brazil aspiration
to UN Security Council
Portuguese Foreign Minister
Diogo Freitas do Amaral said
here Friday that Lisbon supports
the entry of Brazil into the
United Nations Security Council.
"We agree that there is a need
to increase the number of
members in the Security Council
and, obviously, we support the
Brazilian candidacy," said do
Amaral, who was here on an
official visit.
However, do Amaral, who was
received by President Luiz
Inacio Lula da Silva Friday
morning, said Brazil's
membership will not happen in
the short run.
"Based on my international
diplomacy experience, the
Security Council issue will be
more difficult as part of the
reform, and I don't think it
will happen in the short run.
Certainly not this year," he
said.
