Ecuadorian President Pleads for Popular Consultation
President of Ecuador Alfredo Palacio reiterated on Wednesday the need to advance towards popular consultation and ruled out the holding of a Constituent Assembly as he had previously announced.

"I'm not planning a Constituent Assembly, the important thing is to strengthen democratic institutions which were on the brink of passing away, such as the Armed Forces and the Executive, Legislative and Judicial powers," Palacio told the press.

He warned against forgetting the spontaneous plebiscite, referring to the people taking to the streets, and said he wouldn't rule out a convening of a popular consultation as an outcome of workshops and popular assemblies.
