27 parties to participate in general elections
in Peru
Twenty-seven political parties
are expected to participate in Peru's general elections scheduled for
April 2006, the electoral authorities said on Tuesday.
In the coming 24 hours, the parties will have to present their elector
registry. And from October to December, they will select their
candidates and submit the list to the congress, electoral officials
said.
According to Peru's Political Party Law, the parties will have to submit
a registry of their followers by Thursday at the latest. By Tuesday,
only Popular Action and Somos Peru had done so.
"The registry of followers is fundamental for the internal democracy
process, because it is the followers who will have to elect candidates,"
said Fernando Rodriguez, head of the Political Organizations Registry
Office of JNE.
However, Manos Limpias, one of the country's political parties,
questioned the process for the registration of parties and said there
may be irregularities since parties can forge lists of followers who
actually do not exist.
Among the registered parties are the traditional ones including Popular
Action, Aprista Peruano Party and Popular Christian Party.
A number of new parties have also registered, including the ruling Peru
Possible, Somos Peru, Nueva Mayoria, Cambio 90, Union por el Peru,
Solidaridad Nacional and Renacimiento Andino.
The party led by disgraced ex-president Alberto Fujimori, known as Si
Cumple, also entered for the elections.
