Argentinian Government Rejects Catholic Leader´s Accusations
Argentina´s Secretary of Religious Affairs Guillermo Oliveri has rejected accusations by a prelate of the Catholic Church in which he questioned the religious freedom in the country.

Oliveri said that the statements by Monsignor Carmelo Giaquinta, president of the Argentinian Episcopate´s Commission on Social Pastoral Issues, are not prudent at this moment.

Monsignor Carmelo Giaquinta criticized the decision of President Néstor Kirchner to suspend Monsignor Antonio Baseotto from his post of military prelate.

The decision was in response to statements by Bishop Baseotto against Health Minister Ginés González García, who favors the legalization of abortion.

Oliveri also said that the government does not have to give any explanation to the Vatican regarding Kirchner´s decision to withdraw Baseotto´s endorsement and his salary of more than $1,700 a month.

The Secretary of Worship said that it would be convenient to revise some agreements made in the past to seek a friendly relation with the Vatican State. Oliveri added that some of these agreements were signed under de facto governments and may lack legality.
