Nicaraguan ex-minister calls Rumsfeld "evil"
Former Interior Minister of Nicaragua Tomas
Borge on Tuesday described as "evil" US Defense Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld who charged Nicaragua of selling missiles to Palestinians and
the Spanish separatist group ETA.
"If Rumsfeld says there are (Russian-made) SAM-7 missiles (in the wrong
hands), let's find them. But those of the Nicaraguan army are in its
arsenals under control," Borge told state-run Radio Nicaragua.
"Rumsfeld is either an idiot or an evil person, or both things at the
same time," said Borge, the undersecretary general of the Sandinista
Front of National Liberation (FSLN), the principal opposition party of
Nicaragua.
Rumsfeld said Monday that Borge sold the SAM-7s to the Palestine
Liberation Organization (PLO) and separatist group Basque Homeland and
Freedom (ETA) in the 1980s when the FSLN was the ruling party of
Nicaragua.
The US official made those remarks while flying to Argentina as part of
his Latin American tour.
The FSLN government received anti-air weapons from the former Soviet
Union in the 1980s to defend from paramilitary groups which were armed
and financed by the United States.
