Florido denounced the large estates in the hands of drug lords in
Guatemala that enjoy total impunity due to their economic power and huge
arsenal.
Vice President Eduardo Stein voiced his concern for the potential
consolidation of this trend since they already penetrated government,
political and business circles.
Florido told the media about the considerable economic power split among
10 cartels own by drug traffickers here while the US Drug Enforcement
Agency (DEA) says that out of the annual 150 tons of drug to pass
through Guatemalan territory 10% feed the national market.
They basically operate in San Marcos, Quetzaltenango (west), Coban and
Peten (north), Retalhuleu (south), Chiquimula and Zacapa (east) and
Izabal (north east) Departments.
He deplored that the estates location near border areas facilitate
clandestine operations and impunity, such as light aircraft landing, and
their links with the lethal youth gangs known as Maras.
The Maras -that became the latest social concern for the extreme
violence of its male and female members traced up to US territory- are
also the traffickers source of thugs and mules.
Stopping the growth of cartels in Guatemala is a key mission for my
office, added Florido.
