Ecuadorian organizations denounce sanctions
against Cuba
Several organizations in Ecuador rejected on Saturday the anti-Cuba
policy of the United States andasked President Lucio Gutierrez to
abstain from condemning Cuba before the United Nations Human Rights
Commission (UNHRC) in Geneva.
The accusations of the United States, through some "puppet governments"
at the UNHRC against Cuba, lack validity, said Alfredo Vera, vice
president of the National Coordination of Solidarity With Cuba.
Vera asked Gutierrez not to join the anti-Cuba actions of the US and
urged him to respect the will of the Ecuadorian people. He also called
on Ecuadorians to support Cuban people in deciding their own destiny.
Elsy Monje, executive director of the Ecumenic Human Rights Commission
of Ecuador and president of the Ecuadorian Human Rights Front, demanded
the UNHRC quit the selective and discriminative policy toward developing
nations.
The US-led maneuver at Geneva is part of Washington's efforts to justify
the embargo on the island, which is a true violation of human rights,
she said.
Monje questioned why the UNHRC has not condemned the "atrociousviolations
committed by the United States," in spite of the fact that they have
been repudiated by the international community.
