The Exodus is On
The exodus to the beaches, recreational
areas and those leave Costa Rica all together has begun.
The main highways and airport were clogged as motorists patiently made
their way on the main highways out of San José.
At the airport, at 3:30pm, the air traffic movement was congested that
up to five international airlines waited on the tarmac for their turn on
the runway.
In the northern border of Peñas Blancas, more than 20.000 Nicaraguans
are expected to cross the border in the next few days, as they make
their way home to spend the Semana Santa holiday with family and friends
in their country.
And those are the legals. Immigration officials say that some 50.000
illegal Nicarguans are expected to cross the border that divides the two
countries. Coyotes - those dedicated to help those with documents cross
the border - are charing between ¢10.000 and ¢20.000 colones (us$21 and
$42 dollars) per person.
Additional Fuerza Púnblica (police) and immigration officers will be on
hand at the border to control the movement of people - legal and illegal
- and will keep the border on the Costa Rican side open from 6am to 12
midnight for the next few days. Normal hours are from 6am to 8pm.
