ICE Postpones Sale of Cellular Lines
In an attempt to avoid the long lines of
the past, the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) decided not
to offer beginning Monday the 5.000 cellular lines it has on hand, but
rather ask customers who want cellular service to add their name on a
list and each will be served on a first come first served basis.
The lines are that of customers who decided to cancel their cellular
subscription and/or that customers failed to pay their bills. ICE has
had a policy that it will suspend service failing to make payment past
the due date and cancel the service entirely if two consecutive payments
are not made.
The move to use a list is to avoid the long lines of last year - in
December and July - when thousands lined outside various offices of ICE
and stretched the utility's resource to meet the demand in the shortest
possible time.
In Costa Rica, those who want to subscribe to cellular service need to
have a "cedula" or be residents. At present, aside from the small number
of lines that the telephone company makes available from time to time,
you cannot walk into an ICE office and get connected.
There just aren't any lines available until the recently approved
Ericsson contract to provided 600.000 GSM lines, which is expected to be
in place not before December of this year.
