Three More Months for Former President Calderón
The Juzgado Penal del Segundo Circuito
Judicial yesterday decided to extend former president Rafael Angel
Calderón's preventive detention for another three months.
Calderón was set to be released on nest week on March 22, when his
original preventive detention ordered expired. The Fiscalía had
requested a six month extention.
The preventive detention is keep Calderón from impeding the prosecutor's
investigation into the accusations that the former president received a
commission payment for his role in the Fischel-Caja scandal, where the
government of Finland gave the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS)
a us$39 million dollar loan to purchase medical equipment, arranged
through the Corporación Fischel.
Calderón is being investigated for receiving more than us$500.000
dollars through a Panamanian corporation.
The former president how has three working days to make an appeal to the
judge's decision. Given that next week is Semana Santa and that many
government offices and courts are closed for the holiday period, it
could be the following week before his appeal, if any, can be heard.
