Bolivian president to ask for early general
elections
Bolivian President Carlos Mesa says he will
ask the National Congress on Wednesday to call early general elections
on August 28th.
The next elections are currently scheduled for June 2007.
In a nationally broadcast speech, Mesa says that the early elections are
the only way to dissolve the current social disorder in the country.
In recent weeks, Mesa's government has faced growing protests, with
street demonstrations and road blockades throughout the country to
protest the government's controversial oil and gas policy.
In the face of disorder domestic situation, Mesa submitted resignation
to the congress on March 7th. But the legislative body unanimously
turned down his resignation.
