Former President Rodríguez is Home
It was almost 4:00pm when the while van
carrying former president Miguel Angel Rodríguez pulled up to the
driveway in San Rafael de Escazú and disappeared into the garage of the
home.
The move of Rodríguez from a jail in La Reforma prison to his luxurios
home in an affluent neighbourhood west of San José came after Judge
Gabriela Jarra sided with Rodríguez in his plea for a release for jail
to carry out his preventive detention under house arrest.
Rodríguez was to have deposited ˘250 million colones (us$535.000
dollars) with court as a condition of his leaving jail, as well
promising to not interfere with the ongoing investigation, tamper with
evidence and not flee the country.
Rodríguez told reporters waiting outside of his home that "I have said
repeatedly that I came back to the country voluntarily to defend myself
before the Tribunales de Justicia. To do so I resigned from my
international commitment and the immunity to face the prosecutors.
Never have I pretended to escape the actions of the authorities nor
place obstacles in their paths, in the contrary, I came back to place
myself before them, defend myself and clear myself. I will be here, I
will not run, because I want to defend myself from the accusations, a
commitment I have assumed from the beginning."
Rodríguez continued his comments that he is only interests in a fair and
just trial. His arguments thus far have been that his "rights" have been
violated and that the Fiscalía (prosecutor's office) mounted a show
before the public following his arrival in Costa Rican on October 14,
2004.
The former president, as part of the conditions of his house arrest,
cannot leave the house and can only receive visitors approved by the
court. A member of the Fuerza Publica will be on a 24 hour surveillance
detail outside of his home and is there to ensure that the court's
decision is respected.
Miguel Angel Rodríguez has insisted from day one that he is innocent of
all the accusations and that in time he will be vindicated in court.
