All the President's Men and Women
A report in today's edition of the Spanish language daily newspaper
La Nación says that some 50 people are in charge of taking care of
President Abel Pacheco's image, deciding where the president goes, whom
he visits and what will be discussed at press conferences.
The group is made up of public employees and private consultants hired
by Casa Presidencial who work to guard the image of the president and
process the different elements that create the president's image.
First Vice President, Linneth Saborío, says that the group goes beyond
just creating and maintaining the president's public image, but also to
inform the public.
The group not only acts as advisor to the President, it also ensures
that the government is responsive to the people.
Comparing this group to similar groups in other countries, it is rather
small. Saborío told the La Nación reporter that all prior
governments have had this type of advisor group, which among many
functions, include preparing the President for questions at press
conferences and advising on public campaigns.
Saborío was quick to counter that "the group's function is not to
manipulate information that is made public, but, rather, to steer the
government in the right direction and make the decisions more visible."
