Venezuelan president may
reconsider ties with US
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
reiterated the possibility of
reconsidering the ties with the
United States on Wednesday,
after a letter revealed US
intention to act against the
country.
"There was a chance that in the
future we break relations with
the United States," Chavez said
after reading the letter at the
First Caribbean Energy Summit in
Puerto La Cruz, 220 km east of
Caracas.
In the letter dated June 27, the
United States asked the
countries of the Caribbean
Community to discuss democratic
principles and respect the
Inter-American Democratic
Charter of the Organization of
American States.
Chavez said the US side also
accused him in the letter of his
rule and using Venezuela's oil
to try to destabilize neighbors.
"This is abominable," said he.
The president said it is a
document which disrespects the
Venezuelan people and another
attempt of US savage imperialism
and intervention in the
Venezuelan internal affairs. He
was upset about the action.
Venezuela and the United States
have been at odds since Chavez
took office six years ago.
Caracas criticized Washington
for supporting an abortive coup
aimed at overthrowing the Chavez
government in April 2002. Chavez
