At least 23 Colombian troops
killed in clashes with rebels
At least 23 Colombian soldiers
were killed in combat with
rebels on Saturday, the army
said.
Seventeen members of Colombia's
army died in the province of
Putumayo when their base was
attacked by the Revolutionary
Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Another eight soldiers went
missing in the battle, the army
said.
Six more soldiers died in
fighting with the guerrilla
group in the province of North
Santander, near the Venezuelan
border.
FARC is the largest rebel
organization in Colombia with at
least 17,000 members operating
throughout the country.
