US Southern Command Presence in
Chile Protested
The Chilean Communist Party (PC)
protested Saturday the presence
in the country of General Ben
Craddock, chief of the US Army
Southern Command, and demanded
information about his visit from
the government.
The PC questions in a letter to
Defense Minister Jaime Ravinet,
participation of the US military
officer in what they call First
Southern-Cone Defense
Conference, which regional top
military officers attended.
The letter signed by Jorge
Insunza, in charge of
International Relations in that
group, highlighted that judging
from “the little information
about the meeting,” its agenda
must have had the increase of
coordination work by the
military commands as the main
issue.
According to Insunza, the
Chilean people have the right
receive information from the
authorities about the aspects
discussed in that meeting and
the purpose for the top military
officer´s presence in the
country.
