Bolivian leader promises clean elections
Bolivia's acting President Eduardo Rodriguez promised Wednesday that there will be "clean" general elections.

Rodriguez made the pledge to union leaders of the western city of El Alto, center of a series of anti-government demonstrations which led to the resignation of President Carlos Mesa.

Protesters demanded a new constitution, the nationalization of the oil and gas industry, and the resignation of all legislators.

They agreed to suspend action after Mesa's resignation, but warned protests and roadblocks would resume if their demands are not met.

Rodriguez, former head of the Supreme Court and third in line to become president, took over the presidency after heads of both houses of the parliament gave up their constitutional rights to succeed.
