Bolivians Want a New Congress
Bolivian parliamentarians are
facing Tuesday a new day of
social pressures to resign and
pave the way for advanced
general elections, supported by
student groups, the Catholic
Church, the United Nations, and
the Community of Andean Nations.
The leader of the Unity Pact
between farmers and indigenous
people Roman Loayza has warned
that if the December elections
are only presidential and do not
include the Congress, they will
restart protests that began on
May 16 and led to President
Carlos Mesa´s resignation on
June 6.
The farm leader said they must
elect a new legislative house
because the current one no
longer represents its
constituents.
The Movement toward Socialism
party is presenting a bill to
Congress to shorten the term of
office of deputies and senators,
which extends formally until
August 2007, and finish it in
December.
A group of lawmakers have
already presented their
resignation but have been
accused of having put on a "show
for the media."
