Corruption Scandal Still
Swirling in Brazil
Brazilian Federal Police are
investigating a network
suspected to be behind the
Empresa de Correos (postal)
corruption scandal that has
caused a month-long political
crisis in Brazil.
Accusations of bribery involving
governing PT (Workers’ Party)
were setoff on May 14 by
rightwing magazine Veja.
PT vice president and former Sao
Paulo mayor, Marta Suplicy, has
threatened a libel suit against
the opposition magazine Veja for
its allegations against her
“image, honor and dignity”.
In addition to the four suspects
arrested this week, police have
a warrant for Arthur Wascheck
and Antonio Velasco, owners of
Coman, supplier for Correos, on
charges of decommissioning
computers and other materials.
Wascheck is accused of paying
for bribery tapes, in the
scandal that has spread to
involve not only corporate
chiefs, but ex government and
military officials, according to
Luiz Zampronha, in charge of the
police investigation.
