500 Nicaraguans Given Medical
Scholarships in Cuba
Nicaragua´s Sandinista National
Liberation Front (FSLN) general
secretary, Daniel Ortega,
confirmed that 500 nationals
will receive free medical
scholarships to study in Cuba.
Ortega thanked Cuba President
Fidel Castro for the gesture
with the people of Nicaragua,"
especially with the poor
families whose children would
have never reach college
otherwise."
The FSLN leader made his
statement from Esteli
Department, 190 km north of the
capital, where he attended the
celebrations on the 26th
anniversary of the liberation of
several areas by the Sandinista
Popular Army.
The political leader added that
175 newly graduated doctors will
return home after completing
studies at Cuban universities
while another 500 are still
studying on the Caribbean
Island.
He finally said that 50 of
latest beneficiaries arrived in
Havana, another 190 fly to
Havana by month"s end and rest
will follow before September,
raising to 1,000 the number of
nationals becoming doctors
"thanks to the generosity of the
Cuban Socialist Revolution."
