"Guida Carros" To Get Training
Parking on the downtown streets
and night spots in San José can
be risky business, not only for
the owners of the vehicles, but
those who dedicated their lives
to watching the cars while their
owners are away from them.
Known as "guida carrros", these
men earn a living, like
Guillermo Bonilla, who is known
as "el abuelo" (grandfather),
has raised a family of 12
children watching cars for the
last 12 years, knowing full well
the dangers that are associated
with the job.
Bonilla says he has a secret to
watching cars, but wouldn't
reveal it.
Now, the Ministerio de Seguridad
Pública concerned about the
safety of vehicles owners,
especially in 'rough'
neigbourhoods and the safety of
those who watch the cars, is
developing a training program
for them.
According to the Organismo de
Investigación Judicial (OIJ),
the areas of Guadalupe,
Desamparados and MOravia are the
areas with the greates car
thefts and authorities are
concerned that guida carros like
el abuelo are great risk and the
car owners are fooled into a
self sense of security for
themselves and their vehicles.
The training program will help
the guida carros and the owners
of the vehicles with the intent
to reduce the number of car
theft incidents.
