Two tons of cocaine confiscated
in Colombia
The Colombian army said on
Sunday that its marine corps
confiscated two tons of cocaine
in the Pacific coast area with
the help of the United States.
A spokesman for the Colombian
army said the action took place
off the southwestern Colombian
port of Tumaco which lies on the
border with Ecuador.
He attributed the successful
confiscation to the help from US
authorities.
Under an agreement between
Bogota and Washington in 1999,
the United States agrees to
provide Colombia with equipment
and materials as well as
information on smugglers in an
effort to combat
drug-trafficking in the South
American country.
Colombia is one of the world's
largest cocaine producers with
an output of 580 tons per year,
amounting to 90 percent of the
world's total. Most of the
cocaine go to the United States
and West Europe.
Last year, more than 100 tons of
cocaine was confiscated in
Colombia.
