Court Calls off Electricity
Tariff Hikes in Nicaragua
The crisis sparked in Nicaragua
worsened this Saturday due to
the 11.83% rise of the
electricity tax approved by
President Enrique Bolaños.
Managua´s Second Court president
Gerardo Rodriguez told the press
about the court´s ruling of
putting off the hike in power
tariffs after evaluating the
appeal on the grounds of
unconstitutionality lodged by
several deputies belonging to
the Partido Liberal
Constitucionalista (PLC).
Bayardo Izaba, judicial director
of the Nicaraguan Center for
Human Rights, confirmed the
measure raising electricity
prices is illegal and arbitrary,
and marked out Bolaños´
faculties to change the energy
tariff.
Ruth Selma Herrera, coordinator
of the Network to Defend
Consumers, accused the
government of relinquishing
people of their natural
resources, to increase cost of
living in the poorest Central
American nation.
Protests by the population,
unions, students and civil
society organizations compelled
the head of state to call off
the decree, declared illegal by
Congress, after suspending
constitutional guarantees.
