Mexicans accused of exploiting
deaf compatriots
Two Mexicans accused of
exploiting deaf Mexican
immigrants in the United States
were extradited, the Mexican
attorney general's office
announced Tuesday.
Jose Paoletti Moreda and his son
Renato Paoletti Lemus, both
deaf, were accused of forcing
dozens of illegal deaf Mexican
immigrants to work under their
control in US cities and taking
away the money the workers
earned, the office said in a
statement.
The two had been turned over to
the US Federal Bureau of
Investigation on a flight to New
York, the statement said,
without mentioning the exact
date.
The two kept the smuggled
workers' passports and other
identification documents to
prevent them from escaping, it
said.
They forced the workers to sell
merchandise at airports, on
streets and in subway stations
in New York, Boston,
Philadelphia, Baltimore and
Washington D.C., said the
statement.
The suspects were arrested in
1997 and had been jailed ever
since. The Mexican Foreign
Ministry approved their
extradition to the United States
on May 18, 2005.
