Peruvian economy minister to run
for IDB presidency
Peruvian Economy and Finance
Minister Pedro Kuczynski will
formally run for presidency of
the Inter-American Development
Bank (IDB), Foreign Minister
Manuel Rodriguez announced
Friday.
President Alejandro Toledo "is
very committed to the issue of
the candidacy and has started
talking with his counterparts of
the region and the IDB governors
to obtain the necessary support
(for Kuczynski)," Rodriguez
said.
After heading the regional
financial institution for 17
years, IDB President Enrique
Iglesias, a Uruguayan, will quit
in September when he will take
the post of secretary general of
the Iberian-American Summit.
Kuczynski has enormous expertise
in the world of economy and
finance at an international
level, both in the state and
private sectors and in
multilateral organizations.
Among his major competitors is
Colombia's ambassador to the
United States, Luis Alberto
Moreno.
The IDB, the world's largest
regional development bank, was
established in 1959 by the
Organization of American States
to provide loans for member
states in their economic
development and has now 47
members.
