Bus Accident Leaves 26 Tourists
Injured
At least 26 tourists resulted
with injury when a bus carrying
42 passengers flipped over on a
highway near San Ramón, north of
San José.
The cause of the accident is
still not clear.
The Red Cross said it
transferred 22 injured
passengers to a from the scene.
A woman with severe injuries was
taken by air to a private
hospital in San José, along with
five other passengers with
lesser injuries, while the rest
were taken to hospitals in San
Ramón and San Carlos. The
remaining passengers were
unhurt.
The bus is operated by a the
private tour operator TURIAL was
travelling from San José to the
Arenal Volcano, a popular
tourist attraction.
Among the tourists on the bus,
there were a number of American
and Canadian nationals.
Elaine Samson, spokeswoman for
the U.S. Embassy in San José,
said U.S. consular officials
were in contact with Costa Rican
authorities and hospital
officials.
The Canadian Press reports an
Ottawa man is believed to be
only Canadian on the bus. Dan
McHugh, 23, told Broadcast News
by telephone from hospital in
San José, he was being treated
for what appeared to be minor
injuries.
McHugh said the road was slick
and the bus slid into a ditch
and rolled onto its side. He
said he was cut by shattered
window glass, although other
passengers were pinned under the
bus.
The route between San Ramón and
Arenal is usually wet by mist
and rain as it weaves through
the mountains and cloud forest.
Accidents like the one yesterday
are rare.
